Aubusson tapestry began to earn its worldwide reputation when Flemish tapestry-makers took refuge here in 1580 and its fame spread when the famous "The Lady and the Unicorn" tapestry was discovered in Boussac castle, in Creuse.

For the last 6 centuries, Aubusson has been the only place in the world where all trades involved in tapestry-making coexist : from the production of wool to tapestry shops. There are many workshops, galleries and factories in and around Aubusson. Most contemporary tapestries are made to order. Aubusson tapestries are exported all over the world.
